Standard Underarm & Aluminum Crutches for Disable and Handicapp People

A crutch is a mobility aid that transfers weight from the legs to the upper body. It is often used for people who cannot use their legs to support their weight, for reasons ranging from short-term injuries to lifelong disabilities.

A crutch must do two things reduce weight load on one of your legs and broaden your support base to improve your balance and stability. The support also should assist upright movement and transmit sensory cues through the hands. A Underarm Crutches allows people with paralysis or other disabilities the benefits of upright posture and lets them maneuver in places they cannot go with a wheelchair.

These non-traditional crutches are useful for users with an injury or disability affecting one lower leg only. They function by strapping the affected leg into a support frame that simultaneously holds the lower leg clear of the ground while transferring the load from the ground to the user's knee or thigh. This style of crutch has the advantage of not using the hands or arms while walking. A claimed benefit is that upper thigh atrophy is also reduced because the affected leg remains in use. Unlike other crutch designs these designs are unusable for pelvic, hip or thigh injuries and in some cases for knee injuries also.

Benefits of forearm crutches : There must be something to the fact that forearm crutches are the preferred walking aid among long term crutch users. Or, just ask anyone that has had to endure the use of underarm crutches for more than a couple of weeks, and most will tell of a painful and sometimes debilitating experience. From armpits rubbed raw to major wrist pain and in some cases permanent nerve damage, underarm crutches can at times cause more harm than the original injury. However, underarm crutches are still a common walking aid and for some, may be their only option.

Standard Aluminum Crutches push-button crutches feature a Double extruded center tube that provides load-bearing strength where it's needed the most. The special foot piece utilizes durable rivets to secure the aluminum tubing from the inside, providing more stability than plastic connectors. Long, virtually unbreakable stair deflector helps protect against the crutch slipping on stairs and helps increase stress tolerance at all angles without cracking; non-skid rubber tips provide good traction.

Aluminum Crutches Features :
  • High-strength aluminum alloys tube
  • Both handgrip and foot height adjustable
  • Comfortable PU foam underarm pad
  • Size ; L-135-155 cm,
  • Size ; m-114-34 cm,
  • Size ; S-95-115 cm
While traditional crutches (also referred to as underarm crutches) are supported by pads that the user secures between his or her rib cage and upper arm, forearm crutches work differently. Folding Forearm Crutches style of walking aid is used by inserting the arm into a partial cuff and taking hold of the handles that lie on the anterior side either crutch. If you struggle with mobility or balance when using an underarm variant, you may find that this style provides you with greater stability.

There are various walking aids which can help people with impaired ability to walk and Underarm Crutches or Arm Crutches for more severe disability or longer journeys which would otherwise be undertaken on foot. For people who are blind or visually impaired the white cane and guide dog have a long history of use. Other aids can help with mobility or transfer within a building or where there are changes of level.

  • First of all, our custom underarm crutches have much larger and safer foot print (dual tipped, patent pending) stated by “Cripple Children’s Canada” to be  the newest innovation in crutches in 20 years. The two foot design also eliminates the weak point where the side tubes and the bottom tube comes together.
  • Secondly, the handholds and underarm supports are shaped from solid, marine grade, high density plastic and are virtually indestructible. The underarm supports have been carefully shaped to securely hold the crutch in place when walking while significantly reducing underarm chafe. Underarm and handheld padding can be easily added.
  • And thirdly, they are available in both titanium and high tensile aluminum tubing. The aluminum tubing, though almost as strong as titanium, allows us to make these crutches for less than half the price of an equivalent titanium crutch. And as a bonus, they are unbelievably light.

Benefits of underarm crutches:
  • Improved comfort
  • Ease of use
  • Prevention of axillary nerve damage or axillary nerve palsy
  • Provide a more neutral/natural (ergonomic) position of the hand and wrist
  • Improved agility and walking speed
  • Easier and safer to ascend and descend stairs
  • Improved posture
  • Allows for a variety of walking styles (gaits)
  • Improved stability over rough or uneven surfaces
  • Smaller and more compact for travel
  • Typically lighter in weight
  • Modern and aesthetically pleasing designs

Crutches, in general, are medical devices that assist people ambulate from one place to another when they are unable to walk due to an illness or injury. They act as an assistive device by helping support the person's body weight in hopes the patient can be more mobile. Lofstrand crutches, more commonly known as Arm Crutches, consist of bands that encompass the forearms along with having handles for the patient to hold and rest his/her hands; the bands and hand rests act together to help support the patient's body weight. The forearm band has a quick release making it easy to take off the crutches when wanted or to relieve the forearms from damage if a fall occurs.

Forearm, or elbow crutches have a cuff that encircles your forearm and a handgrip that you hold onto. They are used to support you when walking. If you are given crutches by a healthcare professional pay attention to their advice on how to use them. You may find that you need to adjust the height to suit you and make you most comfortable. Forearm crutches are relatively straightforward to adjust, but ensure that after any adjustments you secure them at the new height or you could risk an accident.

3 Basic Types of Walking Crutches

Walking Crutches: There are 3 basic types of walking crutches and they are used to reduce weight bearing on one or both legs, or to give additional support where balance is impaired and strength is inadequate.
  1. Arm Crutches
  2. Elbow Crutches
  3. Forearm Crutches
1. Arm Crutches:

Arm Crutches
  • Our Price:Rs.534
They are made of wood with an axillary pad, a hand piece and a rubber ferrule. The position of the hand and the total length are usually adjustable. The Hand Crutches should rest against the chest wall approximately 5 cm below the apex of the axilla and the hand grip should be adjusted to allow the elbow to be slightly flexed when weight is not being taken. Weight is transmitted down the arm to the hand piece. The elbow is extended. Weight should not be taken through the axillary pad as this could lead to a neuropraxia of the radial nerve or brachial plexus.

Measurement of length It is usually carried out with patient in lying.

With shoes off measure from apex of the axilla to the lower margin of the medial malleolus.
With shoes on 5cm below the apex of the axilla to a point 20 cm lateral to the heel of the shoe. This tends to be less accurate than the first method.

The measurement from the axillary pad to the hand grip should be taken with the elbow slightly flexed (approximately 15 degree) from a point 5 cm below the apex of the axilla to the styloid process.

2. Elbow Crutches:

Elbow Crutches
  • Our Price:Rs. 1275
They are made of metal and have a metal or plastic forearm band. They are usually adjustable in length by means of a press clip or metal button and have a rubber ferrule. These crutches are particularly suitable for patients with good balance and strong arms. Weight is transmitted exactly the same way as axillary crutches.

Measurement of length It is usually carried out with patient in lying with shoes on. The Elbow Crutch slightly flexed (approximately 15 degree) and the measurement is taken from the ulnar styloid to a point 20 cm lateral to the heal of the shoe. Once the patient is standing with support, the length must be checked.

3. Forearm Crutches:

Forearm Crutches
  • Our Price:Rs. 600
They are made of metal with a padded Forearm Crutch support and strap, an adjustable hand piece and a rubber ferrule. These are used for patients with rheumatoid disease, who require some form of support but cannot take weight through hands, wrists and elbows because of deformity and/or pain.

Measurement of length If the patient can stand, it is better to assess the required length in this position from elbow to the floor. Measurement can be carried out with the patient lying with shoes on, and is taken from the point of flexed elbow to 20 cm lateral to the heel.

Preparation for crutch walking:
Arms: The power of the extensors and adductors of the shoulder and the extensors of the elbow must be assessed and if necessary strengthened before the patient starts walking. The hand grip must also be tested to see that the patient has sufficient power and mobility to grasp the hand piece.

Legs: Non weight bearing- The mobility and strength of the unaffected leg should be assessed, paying particular attention to hip abductors and extensors, the knee extensors and the plantar flexors of the ankle. These muscles must be sufficiently strong to take weight.
Partial weight bearing- The mobility and strength of both legs should be assessed and muscles strengthened where necessary.

Balance: Sitting and standing balance must be tested and trained if necessary.
