Cervical Collars are an orthotic device used primarily in the treatment of neck injuries and strains. The most common use of cervical collars is during recovery after surgery on the cervical spine. They are also used in whiplash injuries and conditions like Cervical Radiculopathy, which is caused by the nerves in the neck compressing due to herniated disks in the spinal cord. The main function of the cervical collar is to immobilize the neck and hold it in a gravity-neutral position (Cervical Lordosis) to speed recovery.

There are two types of Cervical Collar available. The soft collar and the rigid collar. Each of these types are made differently, and for different uses.
- Soft Cervical Collar: The soft cervical collar is not designed to completely restrict motion. It depends on providing resistance to movement, which tells the patient to restrict their movements.
- Rigid Cervical Collar: Rigid cervical collars are made of tough and firm materials like Plexiglas. These collars are designed to restrict mobility more than the soft collar.
Guidelines for Using a Neck Brace :
Patients/caretakers need to follow the below steps while wearing the collar.
- Stabilize the neck
- Shift their torso to the left without twisting the neck
- Cautiously place the collar’s back around the neck
- Place the front part of the collar on the neck
- Move the frontal side flaps to the back
- Tighten the velcro straps to secure the collar

Work Of Arm Sling :
The Arm Sling works by immobilizing the arm and shoulder by raising the arm and restricting its movement. The arm sits within a material based sling attached to a strap which loops round the patient’s neck to help elevate the arm. The strap can be adjusted manually depending on the patient’s height and arm length, but a professional will always set this before you leave the hospital to ensure that it is fitted accurately.
